United Nations Children Fund or UNICEF says over 30 percent of drinking water sources in South Sudan are not working due to lack of maintenance.
UNICEF’S Chief of Wash Lillian Okwiri while addressing the World Water or Nile Day celebration on Tuesday in Juba, says water sources like taps, boreholes or hand pumps were left because of insufficient technicians, Radio Bakhita reported.
The 2015 Nile Day under the theme: “Water and improved livelihoods”, aims to raise awareness on the relationship between water and poverty alleviation.
Ms Okwiri says one in three people in South Sudan do not have access to improved water sources due to distance and insecurity.
The Ministry of Electricity, Dams and Water Resources Undersecretary Isaac Liabel expresses their commitment to providing sufficient water to South Sudanese.
He explains that investment plan and resources remain a challenge to provide water in the country.
