Justice Minister on Tuesday upon return from Geneva, Switzerland’s Human Rights Summit told journalists that there is no need for the country to sign Roman Statue to become an International Criminal Court or ICC member based in The Hague.
Paulino Wanawila Unango argues that prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes is within the jurisdiction of South Sudan law, adding that signing Roman Statue is optional.
He explains that the Judiciary of South Sudan or JOSS fails to prosecute perpetrators of Juba massacre of mid December 2013 because no complainant appeared to sue anybody for killing his or her people.
International, regional and national human rights groups recently demanded South Sudan government to sign the Roman Statue to allow ICC to probe war crimes and crimes against humanity for justice and accountability of violations in ongoing conflict.
