UN World Food Programme Executive Director marking International Women’s Day to be celebrated on March 8 is paying tribute to girls and women who dream big, saying empowering women empowers humanity.
Ertharin Cousin in a statement on Thursday believes that women and girls who are empowered would lead to females’ ultimate goal of a world with zero hunger.
She calls for women, girls, men and boys’ equal opportunities, access to resources and a regular voice in decisions to achieve a zero hunger world.
The Director said women and their work are central to the production, preparation and provision of food, essential to nutrition security.
WFP gender assessment of one of the poorest countries in the world in 2014 found women had half the time than men to rest in a day and when men woke up to have their breakfast, women already worked for two hours to prepare the food, fetch water and washed children.
