East coast fever hits Ikwoto County

Suspected cases of East Coast Fever were detected in Ikwoto County of Eastern Equatoria State, forcing cattle owners to flee with animals from their kraals.
 
State Animal and Fisheries Resources minister Martine Lorika Lojam told the press on his return from a two-day visit to the affected areas, that swelling of glands under animals’ ears, bleeding nostrils, bloody diarrhea and urine were symptoms of the fever, Radio Emmanuel reported.
 
Minister Lorika cited similar symptoms of East Coast Fever at Loturutur area of the Lokwa community and advised the people to purchase drugs for their animals.
 
The minister advised cattle keepers to isolate sick animals and not to flee from one place to another to avoid spreading the disease.
 
Minister Lorika said they give drugs to cattle owners at cost recovery prices to enable the government raise funds for more stock in the store.
