Eastern Equatoria State capital, Torit on Friday came under petrol crisis forcing motorists and drivers to line up at Seaway fuel station, the only functioning facility.

Several motorists said other fuel stations dried up prompting long queues at Seaway, adding that poor roads affected the arrival of the next consignment of petrol, causing overcrowding, Radio Emmanuel.

Transport fares increased from three to five South Sudanese Pounds for town service on motor cycle and taxi fare from Torit to Juba increased from 80 to 100 Pounds and is expected to rise to 120 SSP.

Seaway Petroleum Manager in Torit Hassan Abdi explained that the station was left with about four to five thousand litres of petrol, expected to finish in one or two days while waiting for a tanker from Juba.

He added that tankers take six to seven days travelling from Juba to Torit town due to poor roads.

Mr Abdi lamented that the station still sells fuel at seven Pounds in the town despite the shortage and poor road conditions coupled with high Dollar exchange rates.

Radio Emmanuel learned that some people in the long lines were buying the fuel to sell in black market to earn 25-30 Pounds per a litre and 12 to 15 Pounds for half a litre in Torit town.
