Two military personnel of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur or UNAMID peacekeepers were killed and one seriously wounded on Thursday in Korma, North Darfur by a group of unidentified armed men.

In a statement CRN got on Friday, the injured soldier later succumbed to his wounds and died in Khartoum, Sudan.

A patrol of Ethiopian peacekeepers came under sudden attack while guarding a water borehole and the perpetrators seized a patrol vehicle and fled the scene.

The Acting Joint Special Representative Abidoun Bashua deeply saddened by the incident, strongly condemned the heinous crime against the peacekeepers.

He called on the government of Sudan to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to justice, saying the attack constitutes a war crime punishable under international criminal law.

Mr Bashua extended the Mission’s and his deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the late peacekeepers and the government and people of Ethiopia.

This incident brings the number of peacekeepers who lost their lives in the hostile action in Darfur to 61 since the inception of the Mission in December 2007.

The unfortunate incident was reported to the Sudanese Foreign Minister on Thursday evening.
