Lakes State Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO Project Coordinator warned that the insecurity and presence of Internally Displaced Persons or IDPs in the state may cause serious famine by 2015.

Louis Bagare complained that the influx of IDPs from Jonglei and Unity States could increase the estimated 1.5 million people who are likely to suffer from looming famine in the country, Good News Radio reported.

The Project Coordinator urged humanitarian agencies and the government to intervene and avert the threatening signs of hunger in the state.

Acting Agriculture Minister Joseph Makerdit blamed the society for leaving farming to only women and elderly people while youths run away to cattle camps during planting season.

He said if young men joined cultivation, food production would increase in the communities.

The two officials made the statement on Thursday marking the World Food Day celebration under the theme: ‘Family farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth’.
