At least 7 people were drowned in floods following heavy rains in Magwi County last month.

Magwi County Commissioner Ben Kingston told Emmanuel Radio that six people were drowned at Owinykibul and one at Atepi River during heavy rains of September.
Commissioner Kinston said he called non-governmental organizations in the County for an emergency meeting and formed an assessment team to verify rain and floods damages instead of relying on rumours.

He said relocation of the people is the best option to save lives and property amidst continued rains that could inflict more damages.

Commissioner Kingston explained that the County does not have the capacity to repair bridges.

He said State Infrastructure Ministry’s engineers are responsible to assess damages and recommend repairs of the bridges.

An area Member of the State Parliament Robert Agany said the crack on the mountain and Atepi River Bridge render thousands needy as they seek safety.

He said the people abandoned their farms with crops at harvesting stage while others were weeding crops the second season.
