UNMISS denies fencing SPLA garrisons to avert desertion

United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS refuted nyamile.com website report on Monday, accusing its peacekeepers of installing barbed wire fencing around SPLA garrisons in various locations in South Sudan.
 
In a statement, it is said the alleged move is to prevent SPLA troops from abandoning their positions in case of future attacks.
 
The Mission highlighted inaccuracies in the report, explaining that there are no Rwandan peacekeepers deployed in Renk, Nasir or Bentiu as claimed in the article.
 
United Nations Security Council mandated UNMISS to protect civilians, monitor, investigate and promote human rights.
 
The Mission is also mandate to facilitate humanitarian assistance delivery and support implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the SPLM/A in Opposition.
