National Legislative Assembly or NLA on Wednesday ratified UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women or CEDAW 1981.
Acting Speaker Thomas Wani Kundu told the Assembly to endorse or reject the Convention in totality as some members raise concerns on certain phrases.
The Augus House clapped in agreement to approve the Convention.
Jonglei State legislator Ann Lino Abyei said the acceptance of CEDAW in the country is appropriate to eliminate unconstitutional discrimination against women in witness of Nationality and Passport acquisition.
She cited an incident in 2012 where she was humiliated following denial to witness her daughter’s documentation.
Juba County legislator Luka Tombekana Monoja cautioned the parliament against ratifying the Convention if it has reservations on legal concerns.
He explained that ratification of the Convention means accepting all practices viewed as rights at international level and that any foreigner could do anything contrary to South Sudan Constitution.
Some parliamentarians raised reservations on the Convention, citing gay marriage and polyandry, describing them unacceptable in South Sudan.
