UN Secretary-General expressed his concern about the security situation in South Sudan and underlined readiness to assist efforts to end violence, promote peace, reconciliation, human rights and accountability.

Ban Ki-moon in the margins of the EU-Africa Summit in Brussels,Belgium met the government delegation and stressed the importance of preventing UN personnel.

The concerns came as United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS continues to report increasing difficult working conditions due to restrictions and harassments against its personnel and partners.

The Mission reported threats, forcible searches of it vehicles, flights and convoys, and movement constraints in violation of the Status of Forces Agreement between the UN and the government.

It called on the government to respect its obligation to ensure the security and the freedom of movement for peacekeepers and humanitarian personnel.

The UN spokesperson Farhan Haq on Tuesday noted that the humanitarian situation in South Sudan remains extremely fragile.

He added that the heads of the UN World Food Programme Ertharin Cousin and Refugee Agency Antonio Guterres were alarmed at the crisis’ arising needs in the country.
