The Government of Japan announced a contribution of 2.5 million US Dollars to the United Nations Mine Action Service UNMAS in South Sudan.
In a statement issued on Friday Japan said the donation was an emergency response and support to the Japanese Engineering Contingent in the country.
The statement added that the donation is part of assistance package amounting to 25 million US Dollars announced by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on January 14 2014 in response to deteriorating humanitarian situation in South
Sudan.
Multi-Tasking Teams to be established by UNMAS would implement a wide range of activities to address humanitarian crisis.
The teams would conduct surveys and clearance of dangerous items in contaminated areas and impact monitoring and needs assessment during clearance operations.
They would provide mine risk education to civil population on potential dangers of explosive materials and assist millions of South Sudanese in many ways.
Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan Mr Takeshi Akamatsu said they look forward to working with UNMAS to free the country from landmines’ threat and other explosive remnants of war.
