The Office of the President on Friday reminded SPLM/A in opposition leader to respect international treaties on human rights by not killing innocent civilians.

Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny warned Dr Riek Machar Teny of rebellion where civilians were killed, raped and tortured whenever opposition forces capture a town.

He pleaded to forces loyal to Riek Machar to spare innocent civilians, not fighting either side of the conflict as required by international laws.

Mr Ateny lamented that rebels were carrying out targeted killings against ethnic identities and were raping women with impunity at broad day light in Malakal.

He accused the opposition forces of brutally killing sick elderly people and children in Malakal Hospital beds while re-taking Upper Nile State city.

The Press Secretary said President Salva Kiir Mayardit instructed negotiators in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to carry on with peace talks despite of the outrageous violation of Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in Malakal.

Mr Ateny said the government remains committed to peaceful settlement of the conflict despite lack of face to face talks with the opposition forces.

Counter-accusations of Cessation of Hostilities Agreement violations became common due to absence of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development Monitoring and Verification Mechanism team on the ground.
