Eight explosive detection dogs arrived in Juba on Tuesday to strengthen security within United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS compounds.

The dogs were flown from Afghanistan and are currently undergoing training with UN Mine Action Service or UNMAS Mine Tech contractors to adjust to the new environment.

UNMAS Chief of Operations Robert Thompson in a statement on Wednesday said the dogs would be for the protection of civilians at UN house and Tomping compounds and some would be flown to Bentiu and Malakal when needed.

He added that the dogs will rotate and conduct periodic searches for smuggled items.

UNMAS Chief of Operations said the dogs would be in South Sudan until the end of June.
