African Union or AU Commission Chairperson appointed Bineta Diop as Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security.
A statement issued on Tuesday said Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma announced the appointment on January 30 during the opening of the 22nd Assembly of Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ms Diop has 35 years of experience working in human rights, peace building and development in Africa and other parts of the world.
She founded the Femmes Africa Solidarit√©, a leading global organization to strengthen women’s leadership and engender peace processes in Africa.
Ms Diop’s commitment and dedication to the cause of women earned continental and global recognition as a champion of women’s rights and gender issues.
