The United Nation Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS plans to establish a camp to accommodate internally displaced persons or IDPs who took refuge in its compounds.

UNMISS head Hilde F Johnson told Bakhita Radio that the Mission was planning to set up a camp for IDPs with better facilities meeting humanitarian requirements.

She said the camp would be run by humanitarian agencies with proper security maintenance.

Ms Johnson added that the idea was under discussion by the national government and UNMISS’ authorities.

The head of the Mission explained that out of 60 thousand IDPs at UNMISS’ bases, eight thousand are in Bentiu, nine thousand in Bor and 12 thousand in Malakal.

She lamented that the biggest challenge was Tomping compound in Juba which hosts 17 thousand and UN house, Jebel compound hosting 12 thousand.

Ms Johnson described the condition of the IDPs in UNMISS compounds as bad because many people live in a small place.

She said UNMISS was also working with the government on citizens’ sustainable and safety climate so that they can return to their houses.
