The newly elected moderator of the World Council of Churches or WCC Central Committee called on the government to have a ‘Mandela moment’ as it confronts the aftermath of coup attempt.
Speaking from Geneva on Monday during Nelson Mandela memorial, Agnes Abuom said ‘this is really a Mandela moment for South Sudan.’
She stressed concern for churches in South Sudan that helped to facilitate the formation of the youngest country in the world.
WCC General Secretary Rev Olav Fykse Tveit sent a letter to President Salva Kiir Mayardit expressing profound concern for civilians, peace and justice.
He called on the government to reach out to all in the country in a way that reflects the highest ideals of Mandela.
