The South Sudan Council of Churches Archbishop, Bishops and pastors called for peace and reconciliation in the country.
Rev John Chol of Episcopal Church said church leaders were saddened with the incidents that took place in Juba and Bor town of Jonglei state, Bakhita Radio reported.
He said the leaders condemned the incident that led to loss of lives and separation of families.
Rev Chol said the church leaders condemn and refute media reports that the fighting was between Dinka and Nuer communities.
He said what is happening should not be taken as ethnic conflict between the two communities, but ongoing political difference between the SPLM leaders.
Rev Chol said church leaders urged the public not to link the fight to tribal line while calling on the army to take full control of security and protect civilians.
The church leaders called on the government to ensure safety to the leaders under arrest, speed up justice for any criminal act and seek reconciliation.
The leaders called on the international community to urgently respond to the humanitarian crisis both in Juba and Bor.
