The Government of Japan said it plans to extend its official development aid to South Sudan beyond 220 million US Dollars, the largest contribution among African countries.
The Embassy of Japan in Juba said in a press release on Thursday that the country ‘renewed its commitment in continuing support to South Sudan and extended its assistance of more than 220 million USD to South Sudan in 2013.’
Ambassador Takeshi Akamatsu, who presented the credentials to President Salva Kiir Mayardit as the first Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan on Thursday, said that Japan’s Official Development Assistance is conducted as a ‘joint effort.’
Currently Japan is running eight projects in the areas of agriculture, water, infrastructure and vocational training in Juba, including the new Freedom Bridge across the White Nile.
