Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF is treating the increasing number of Kalaazar patients in northern Jonglei and Upper Nile States.

MSF’s Kalaazar specialist in Lankien Alison Buchanan said many patients admitted with Kalaazar in the past three months were children, most were malnourished.

He explained that ‘MSF has limited number of health facilities, lack transport and inaccessible roads.

Mr Buchanan said MSF treated nearly 360 Kalaazar patients in October 2013.

He said MSF planned to continue up to the end of February 2014 and is expected to treat more than 1500 patients.

MSF Head of Mission Raphael Gorgeu said they set up treatment centres in eight locations in northern Jonglei, and support Malakal Teaching Hospital in Upper Nile State.

He added that the current strategy was to bring diagnostic and treatment services closer to communities to improve access, facilitate early diagnosis, treatment and save lives.’
