Millions of people are still in dire need of help though the overall humanitarian situation improved in several areas of South Sudan.

This was the observation of the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Kyung-Wha Kang during her visit to the country in November 17 and 20.

In a statement issued on Monday she said the many displaced people in Pibor County of Jonglei State need protection, basic services, safety and security to resume their livelihoods.

Ms Kang emphasized the need to focus on resilience and long term recovery including taking advantage of the fertile soil of South Sudan.

She also stressed the need to ensure that children have access to education.

The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs said called on humanitarian agencies to support the government to develop disaster risk reduction and preparedness strategies.

She added that the agencies have to improve resilience of local communities, with particular focus on enabling women to fully participate in decision making processes.
