The trials of Kenya’s president and his deputy for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during post-elections violence in 2007 are on as the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution calling for their deferral.

The draft resolution called for the postponement of the trials of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for at least one year.

Seven members of the UN Security Council okayed the draft resolution but the other eight abstained.

A resolution needs nine votes in favour and no veto from China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States in order to be passed.

More than 1,100 people were killed, 3,500 injured and up to 600,000 displaced in the violence that followed the December 2007 polls.
