The Catholic Bishops of Uganda invited the Pope to visit the country in October next year to celebrate 50 years of the canonization of its martyrs.
Archbishop Cyprian Lwanga of Kampala delivered personally the invitation letter to Pope Francis on September 21, 2013.
New Contact, the bishops’ conference magazine, reported that the pope promised to look at his schedule.
The 22 Uganda Martyrs were declared saints by Pope Paul VI on October 18, 1964 at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Archbishop Lwanga launched the jubilee year on October 18 with a torch that goes through all the 54 parishes of the Archdiocese of Kampala.
