National and state ministries of health in Central Equatoria, Lakes and Western Bahr El Ghazal states are running an obstetric fistula campaign since the end of October in partnership with humanitarian organizations.

The campaign aims to increase access to fistula treatment for women already living with the condition and create awareness to provide psychosocial support to patients, UNOCHA said.

There are around 60 thousand women affected by obstetric fistula in the country.

The number should increase due to the low level of skilled birth attendants and antenatal coverage and high frequency of underage marriages.

The campaign will end on November 15 and  targets 200 women receiving corrective surgery at Juba Teaching Hospital, Rumbek State Hospital and Wau Teaching and that Hospital.

Obstetric fistula is a condition in which a hole is created in a woman’s birth canal due to prolonged, obstructed labour during childbirth.
