AU delegation visits Abyei

A delegation from the AU Peace and Security Council made a two-day visit to Abyei as part of its effort to promote peace, security and stability in the region.
 
The AU Council said in a statement that the visit that took place on November 5 and 6 aimed ‘to mark its solidarity with the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities, as well as with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei.’
 
The delegation met with Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities and the Ethiopians peacekeepers.
 
The AU Council members called for urgent d assistance in the fields of health and education.
 
They wrote that the Ngok Dinka unilateral referendum was the expression of their deep frustration, anger and concerns.
 
The AU Council members stressed the need for continued efforts to resolve the final status of Abyei within the context of the AU proposal of September 2012.
