Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration or DDR program is transforming freedom fighters into developers.

Eastern Equatoria Governor Louis Lobong Lojore disclosed this during a handing over ceremony of a primary school and a health care centre at Tirangore Boma of Torit County, Emmanuel Radio reported.

The Governor described the DDR program as a tool for changing the mindset of fighters from using bullets for killing to using their energy for national development.

He noted that changing freedom fighters’ minds would enable South Sudan to join other states in peace and development.

Mr Lobong called on the regional and international partners to support South Sudan train war veterans into development agents.

National DDR Commission Chairman William Deng Deng called on the veterans undergoing training to pay back to the community the food they ate during the liberation struggle.

Torit County Commissioner German Charles Ojok urged the government and partners to continue providing services to other areas.

He said the school and the health centre will serve various surrounding communities in Hiyala Payam.

The Commissioner called on the people to coexist with their neighbours to access services at the two facilities.

The two projects cost 265 thousand US dollars and their construction employed over 250 community members on daily wages.
