Abyei community voted successfully in a referendum to determine its fate and the ballot casting concluded on Tuesday evening.

Abyei High Referendum Committee spokesperson Luka Biong told Bakhita Radio in a telephone interview that the counting will start on Wednesday.

He said preliminary results would be released on Wednesday and the final results would be announced on Friday.

Dr Biong said the voting process was based on the Abyei Protocol enacted in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Court of Arbitration and the AU roadmap.

He said the protocol defined clearly the Abyei Referendum, and the Ngok Dinka and its residents as the eligible voters.

Dr Biong added that the total percentage that is expected to determine the final fate of the Abyei people is 50 plus one.

Civil society activist Beny Gideon called on the people of South Sudan to support the Abyei community should the government nullify the referendum results.

He appreciated the Ngok Dinka community for coming together to determine their final status.

The Government of South Sudan on Monday said the ongoing Abyei referendum was illegal.
