A senior political analyst urged the governments of South Sudan and Sudan to quickly take serious actions on the issue of Abyei before the community unilaterally voted on the self-determination referendum.
Nathaniel Oyet, who lectures political science at the University of Juba, said the Abyei issue was very serious and the two governments need to respond to the unilateral action of the community, Bakhita Radio reported.
He said the communiqué of the two presidents only agreed to expedite to establish the Abyei Administration, council and police organs and reaffirmed its two percent share in oil revenue but left the unilateral action of the community.
The lecturer added that the two governments need to respond with immediate effect to the unilateral referendum.
Dr Oyet said the government needs to work together with the pressure groups to pursue the interest of the people and gain full support.
He said though the government does not support the unilateral decision it must ensure the people of Abyei to express their rights to self determination.
The national Minister for Information Michael Makuei Lueth on Wednesday said ‘the government will not accept a unilateral decision of the Abyei community.’
