Lakes State Speaker suspended operations at the Legislative Assembly for one week with effect from Tuesday.

In a circular received by Good News Radio on Tuesday afternoon, Speaker John Marik Makur told MPs that his decision was in line with the State Transitional Constitution and the Assembly’s Conduct of Business.

He said he took the decision due to what he called ‘the looming crises in the Assembly.’

Speaker Marik added that he consulted with the Governor.

He wrote that the Assembly would reopen after the return of the State SPLM chairperson Daniel Awet Akot and Caretaker Governor Matur Chut Dhuol.

MPs said the Speaker violated the State Constitution by using powers of the State Governor to suspend the Assembly.

They accused Speaker Marik of using the Constitution to shield himself from removal.

The suspension of the Assembly came as a result of wrangles between the Speaker and 34 MPs fighting to remove him from the post.
