Citizens of Abyei are determined to vote for self-determination as set by the African Union Implementation Panel.

Abyei Referendum Legal Cluster Chairperson Deng Biong Mijak said the community last Friday declared to have a unilateral referendum based on a AU proposal, Bakhita Radio reported.

He said the referendum was postponed in 2011 because it was necessary to determine eligible voters.

Mr Biong added that voter registration started on Sunday and will conclude on Friday.

He said after registration the names would be displayed for objection and later polling would begin.

Mr Biong said the Abyei community already invited international observers from different parts of the world to check the vote.

He said the international observers would monitor the transparency of the exercise for recognition.

The African Union Peace and Security Council issued a statement asking Presidents Salva Kiir and Omar Al Bashir to use the summit to resolve Abyei final status.
