A government official urged the National Parliament to pass the current Labor Bill that is under discussion to protect children from work.

Undersecretary in the National he Ministry of Labor and Public Service Hellen Achiro Lotara said on Monday in Suk Site that the law would regulate child labour, Bakhita Radio reported.

Ms Achiro made the statement during her visit to the site where an old bomb killed four children last week.

She said it was sad that children were exposed to dangerous works.

Ms Achiro noted that employment of underage children is punishable by South Sudan’s law.

She called on all people to take care of their children and send them to school to avoid painful deaths as it happened last week in Suk Site in Juba.

Director General in the Ministry of Labor Clement Phikemon Baime said the children died because they were collecting scrap metal and not because someone employed them.

Mr Baime said that collecting scrap metal was discouraged in South Sudan.

He added that the Ministry of Labor did not encourage employment of children in any form.

Pierre Booyse, G4S Ordinances Management Technical Field Manager, advised people not to pick up any strange metallic objects but reported them to the authorities.
