Blind people celebrated the White Cane Safety Day on Friday in Juba.

South Sudan Association of the Visually Impaired chairperson Ben Lou Poggo said the white cane is very important because it helps blind people to move independently, Bakhita Radio reported.

Mr Lou urged motorists to respect the white cane as the blind people move on the road.

Visually impaired Julius Wani said they were celebrating the day to recognise the importance of the white cane stick.

Mr Wani said the day was supposed to be celebrated on Tuesday but was rescheduled for Friday due to the Eid Al Adha holiday.

White Cane Safety Day was set globally on October 15 of each year since 1964 to mark achievements of blind people and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence.
