Authorities from the national ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources refuted reports of an outbreak of rift valley fever in Eastern Equatoria and Upper Nile states.

GoSS website on Thursday quoted the Director for Disease Control in the ministry of Agriculture as saying there was an outbreak of rift valley fever in Eastern Equatoria and Upper Nile states.

The Director in charge Aluma Araba told Bakhita Radio that the information broadcasted about the outbreak of the disease was not true.

He said the last outbreak of the disease reported in the two states was in 2007 and 2008.

Mr Araba added that there was no outbreak but the ministry was preparing itself to easily intervene in case of any outbreak.

The Director disclosed that the ministry laid down some procedures for reporting outbreaks and suspected cases in states and the grassroots.

He explained that in the event of an outbreak a taskforce would be sent to collect samples for laboratory test.

Mr Araba added that a lot was done at all levels for the community to handle reports on suspected cases of disease outbreaks.

Rift valley fever disease was first discovered in Kenya and moved to South Sudan through livestock across the borders.
