Three peacekeepers from Senegal were killed on Sunday near El Geneina, in West Darfur, by unknown gunmen.
The joint UN-AU mission to Darfur called UNAMID said in a statement that an unidentified armed group attacked a convoy bringing water from El Geneina to the mission’s regional headquarters in West Darfur.
A fourth peacekeeper was injured in the attack that occurred on the same road where a UNAMID patrol was ambushed one year ago.
UNAMID chief Mohamed Ibn Chambas said he was deeply saddened by the death of the peacekeepers.
He described the attack as a grave criminal act and condemned it in the strongest possible terms.
“Such incidents are a reminder to all of us of the great price everyone pays in the absence of peace. Our peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to bring peace to Darfur,” Mr Chambas said.
He called on the Government of Sudan to do its best to bring the attackers to justice.
