The United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS initiated a one-year training program for 100 National Prisons Service cadets at the Prisons Service Academy in Lologo, Juba.

In a statement issued on Thursday, UNMISS said the course which aims at supporting the Prisons Service of South Sudan is the first of its kind in the country.

It said the training will focus on internationally recognized prison standards through a combination of classroom lectures in administration, management and field assignments.

The statement said candidates were selected through a two-month screening among recent university graduates in agriculture, medicine, law and social work across the country.

It added that the trainees including 20 women after completing their training would be deployed to train others countrywide.

Minister of Interior approved all trainings that UNMISS and National Prisons Service designed with the support of the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes.
