He said measles is one of the six highly contagious diseases of childhood.

Dr Matur said since July they were receiving measles-like diseases reports, but did not voice out because they had to get laboratory confirmation.

The Undersecretary said there were 44 reported cases of infected persons without death.

Dr Makur added that the victims were receiving treatment at Malakal hospital.

He said the ministry and partners were exerting efforts to avert the spread of measles beyond Malakal.

He explained that measles is transmitted by droplets from the nose and its symptoms include high fever, cough, red eyes, white spots in the mouth and rashes all over the body.

Dr Makur stressed that measles can be prevented by routine vaccination.
