South Sudan Older People Organization or SSOPO on Monday launched Global Age Watch Index that measures economic and social wellbeing of elderly people.

SSOPO representative Nathaniel Miji told the press in Juba that the Index includes income security, health status, and friendly environment to older people, Bakhita Radio reported.

He said the global report indicates that by 2050 there would be two billion older persons mostly in developing countries including South Sudan.

Mr Miji added that stiff measures need to be taken before taking the risk of high discrimination against older people by year 2050.

SSOPO Administrator Wani Gabriel Loku said South Sudan needs to adopt the Japanese system of caring for older people.

He urged the government to include the rights of older people into the Constitution.

Mr Gabriel called on the entire community to take care of the elderly to avoid them from going begging at streets.

SSOPO in collaboration with Help Aged International organized the Global Aged Watch Index in Juba.
