Eastern Equatoria Government started implementing a three-year project to improve animal production in Greater Kapoeta.
Animal Resources and Fisheries Minister Hassan Alex Urbano said Kapoeta Integrated Development Centre Project is funded by European Union through UN Food and Agricultural Organization or FAO and costs three million South Sudan Pounds, Emmanuel Radio reported.The project includes the construction of a livestock laboratory, import of high quality animals for cross-breeding with local types, construction of water dams and introduction of animal production.
Mr Urbano said the project aimed to improve animal production for commercial and domestic consumption.
He said the state established a veterinary pharmacy and stoked it with drugs imported from India, worth 400 thousand South Sudanese Pounds.
The minister said the state sold 5,768 livestock to Juba and 3,960 animals slaughtered for sale in Torit in the last nine months.
