The Higher Education Ministry is still scrutinizing private higher learning institutions to accommodate an increasing number of secondary school leavers.

The ministry instituted a body to monitor all private learning institutions to upgrade or demote them accordingly, Bakhita Radio reported.

Private Institutions Director-General Andrew Malek, said the ministry decided to close 22 institutions and downgrade some universities to colleges because they could not meet minimum requirements.

Prof Malek warned citizens against misusing their money to get certificates from unrecognized higher learning institution.

He admitted that the country has a lot to do to improve its level of education to meet international standards.

Prof Malek denied claims that South Sudan was desperately in need of education.

St Mary’s and Makenzi were the reduced to colleges, while the Catholic University of South Sudan is recognized as university.

Angelo Lodu, St Mary’s College Secretary, said the college is running two programmes and on process to introduce new colleges to become a university.

Third year student of Rehabilitation sciences at St Mary’s College, Daniel Jada Marcelo, said he was relieved after the ministry recognized the institution.

In September 2012, the ministry closed down 22 private universities due to lack of infrastructures and poor learning environment.
