FAO WELCOMES SOUTH SUDAN

FAO, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, welcomed South Sudan as its newest member state at a conference taking place in Rome this week.

South Sudan’s membership to FAO signals a new era of partnership with the agency.

Agriculture Minister Betty Achan Ogwaro told the FAO Conference that “food security is human security.”

She added that “agriculture is more than food; it is central to the process of healing our society.”

FAO South Sudan Head of Office Sue Lautze said “South Sudan’s accession to Member State status to FAO is the latest milestone in the country’s long journey towards full independence and sovereignty.”

Agriculture is the key to food security, growth and peace and South Sudan has 65 million hectares of land is suitable for agricultural production.
