An Ethiopian peacekeeper was killed and another two injured when their base in Kadugli was hit by two shells on Friday, the UN announced.

The peacekeepers belong to the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei or UNISFA that also patrols a security corridor between South Sudan and Sudan.

UNISFA has its logistics base in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack.

“I urge the Government of Sudan and the SPLM-North to immediately cease hostilities and resume ceasefire negotiations,” Mr Ban said.

UN Security Council members also condemned the attack “in the strongest terms.”

They called on the Sudanese Government to “swiftly” investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The UN did not indicate who fired the two shells into the UNISFA compound in Kadugli.

CRN was in Nuba Mountains last week and heard rumours that the Sudan Revolutionary Front was going to try to take Kadugli from the Government forces.

Kadugli is co-hosting the Kagame Cup, a football completion organized by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations or CECAFA.

The tournament that involves teams from hosting Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Djibouti and Chad should start on Tuesday in Kadugli and El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
