NILE BASIN COUNTRIES MEET IN JUBA

The Nile Council of Ministers or Nile-COM, the governing body of the Nile Basin Initiative, will meet in Juba on Thursday.

The annual ordinary meeting will deliberate on the status of the Nile cooperation and how to move it forward, review Nile Basin Initiative progress in the previous fiscal year and provide strategic guidance for improved efficiency and effectiveness.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the Nile-COM said it would review and approve the Nile Basin Initiative work plan and budget for the fiscal year 2013-2014 and a number of strategy and policy documents.

In the meeting, Rwanda’s Minister for Natural Resources Stanislas Kamanzi will hand over the office to South Sudan’s Minister for Water Resources and Irrigation, Paul Mayom Akec.

The Nile Basin Initiative rotates the position of chairperson among member states annually and in alphabetical order: Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
