The Ministry of General Education and Instruction launched the Girls Education South Sudan or GESS programme in Juba on Friday.

The programme aims to transform a generation by helping 200,000 girls in primary five and above to go and stay in school in the ten states of the country.

GESS will also be the best way to raise families and communities out of poverty, and to put South Sudan on track for sustainable development.

The UK Government donated 60 million British pounds to fund the girl’s education programme in South Sudan.

Speaking during the occasion, Education Undersecretary Deng Deng Yai said the launching of girls education was not the first step in teams of improvement and transformation the ministry is implementing to promote girls’ education.

The head of the Department for International Development in South Sudan, Elizabeth Carriere, who represented the British Government, said the project is an investment for the young girls of the young country which will help at list 200 thousand girls escape poverty through education.

The girls’ education programme is also designed to improve indirectly the education of at least 400 thousand boys by providing support to schools through competition grants to make them better places to learn.
