Eastern Equatoria state government planned to vaccinate over 300 dogs against rabies.

Animal Resources and Fisheries state minister Hassan Alex Urbano said the vaccination will begin with dogs in Torit county and later rolls over to Ikwoto, Budi and Magwi counties, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He said the ministry expects to receive on Tuesday 3,000 rabies vaccines from United Nations Food and agricultural Organization or FAO.

Acting Director of Veterinary Services and Livestock Development in the ministry, Quinto Asaye Alex said there were widespread dog bites in the four counties.

He explained that 200 cases of dog bites were registered last year, with four death cases, 150 persons were treated in Torit, some in Juba, Kapoeta and East Africa.

He warned dog owners to ensure proper management, recommending the state government to kill stray dogs to minimize spread of rabies.
