Darfur peacekeepers condemned in the strongest terms the killing of Mohamed Bashar, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement-Sudan and a number of his colleagues.
In a press release issued on Monday, UNAMID Chief Mohamed Ibn Chambas expressed his deep condolences to the families of the deceased. He said the group had clearly stated its preference for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Darfur when it joined the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur on 6 April in Doha, Qatar.
Mr Chambas urged all sides involved in the fighting in Darfur and especially the non-signatory armed movements to cease hostilities, respect international humanitarian law and engage fully in the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission also condemned in the strongest terms the killing of Mr Bashar and his colleagues.
Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma described the act as cowardly and aimed at dissuading the hold out groups in Darfur from joining the peace process.
