Four inmates at Tonj Central Prison attempted a failed escape while they were taken for bathing at the riverside because the establishment lacks water and sanitation facilities.

Tonj Central Prison Director Fidelis Majok told Radio Don Bosco that four inmates escaped on Tuesday Mr Majok added that the four escapees were recaptured and put in chains.

He said the prison needs a water point and a resident judge to try pending cases and reduce the prison population.

Mr Majok said a UN agency promised to build pit latrines and provide water to Tonj Central Prison but it was diverted to Twic County.

He explained that the inmates are taken to the river to bathe and to collect water to wash the prison and for cooking.

Mr Majok appealed to national and state governments to provide water and sanitation facilities to Tonj Central Prison.

The prison accommodates 281 inmates: 14 are women and 267 men.
