Inter-agencies assessment showed that malnutrition resulting from lack of food could be worse in rural areas in the South of Unity state.

The team also found that the population of Panyijiar generally has very limited access to food and livelihoods, which is likely to worsen during the hunger gap between May and August, UNOVHA said.

Partners are mobilizing to provide food and cash assistance to improve food security in the short term, along with seeds, tools and fishing equipment to strengthen livelihoods.

Aid agencies are also advocating with health authorities to improve health capacity in the area.

Food insecurity was aggravated by extensive flooding in the area in 2012 and cattle-raiding incidents in December 2012.
