HEPATITIS E OUTBREAK UNDER CONTROL AT REFUGEE CAMPS

The outbreak of Hepatitis E in refugee camps in Upper Nile and Unity states is under control as the number of infections declined between February Ð the peak of the outbreak Ð and early April 2013.

The crisis started in mid-2012 in Maban, Upper Nile, and Yida, Unity State, camps housing Sudanese refugees from South Kordofan and Blue Nile State.

9,740 cases were recorded and 182 people died.

Around 60 per cent of cases during the outbreak were found in Yusuf Batil camp in Maban, followed by Jamam, Gendrassa and Doro camps.

Fifty cases were recorded among host communities in Maban.
