A civil society activist said the presidential decree that withdrew unspecified powers from the vice president created tensions in the country and the ruling party should have mechanisms to deal with its own power struggles.

South Sudan Law Society Secretary General Dong Samuel Luak told CRN on Thursday in Juba that the republican decree created uncertainties and reflected a serious mistrust within the presidency.

He said misunderstanding in the country’s highest office could trickle down to communities and lead to unrest if not managed quickly.

Mr Samuel said the republican decree was vague about powers President Salva Kiir delegated to Riek Machar Teny.

He added that the decree was issued to quash a power struggle within the SPLM because the ruling party does not have mechanisms to solve internal issues.

The lawyer said the attitude of using the constitutional powers to solve internal issues was not sound.

Mr Samuel commented that the republican decree was vague and it did not explain the necessity of withdrawing powers from Dr Machar.
