Hunger is hitting hard Payinijar County of Unity State and at least 15 people have already died of starvation.
Simon Chuchu, who works for a NGO in Unity State, told CRN in a telephone interview on Thursday that the situation in Payinijar needs immediate intervention to rescue people from hunger.Dr Chuchu said people are surviving on wild fruits, tree leaves and fish.
He described the situation in Mayandit and Leer counties almost as bad as in Payinijar.
Dr Chuchu said at the beginning of this week some NGOs carried out an inter-agency assessment on food security in Payinijar.
He explained that the assessment team will give its report and recommendations next week for NGOs to provide humanitarian aid to the area.
Dr Chuchu said until now no single organization gave food assistance to the hunger victims in Payinijar.
He added that any humanitarian aid has to be in place now before the roads become impassable.
Dr Chuchu attributed the hunger that is claiming lives to heavy rains that swept crops away in Payinijar, Leer and Mayendit.
